For many Malaysians, the country's electricity supply and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) have become synonymous with each other.

This is in part due to the restrictive nature of the power industry, where the only alternative is independent power producers, some of which have been accused of receiving preferential treatment, an arrangement that has upset TNB executives.

But the vision of a liberalised energy market, which could even see Petronas supplying electricity, may possibly be a way forward.
