Selangor BN lawmakers will petition the Selangor palace tomorrow after a motion on Dr Mahathir Mohamad's "Bugis remark" was rejected by the legislative assembly.

According to Kuang assemblyperson Abdul Shukur Idrus, the petition will state the BN lawmakers' support for the palace's decision to reprimand Mahathir.

He said the petition will also inform the palace of BN's attempt to have the matter debated in the legislative assembly.

"We are very disappointed with the speaker for rejecting the motion which I raised. It is a very important motion.

"We believe that the Pakatan Harapan chairperson had insulted the Bugis community.

"Tomorrow, we will petition the ruler to detail our attempts to have (our motion) to support the palace's position was rejected," Shukur told reporters today.

On Nov 2, Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah reprimanded Mahathir for his "Bugis remark" during a Harapan rally on Oct 14.

Sultan Sharafuddin said that he too had Bugis heritage and took offence with Mahathir's comments. The ruler also urged the police to probe Mahathir for sedition.

During the rally, Mahathir had suggested that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was the descendant of Bugis pirates.

After some claimed that this was an insult against all Bugis people, Mahathir clarified that his remark was aimed squarely at Najib.

Meanwhile, Shukur said the petition will also include a request for an audience with the ruler to discuss how the palace could prevent Mahathir from using Selangor government facilities.

"There have to be penalties against (those) who run (their) mouths and say bad things about an ethnic group," said Shukur.
