Zaid Ibrahim will have to deal with the repercussions of his remarks regarding Selangor ruler Sharafuddin Idris Shah, according to Selangor DAP chairperson Tony Pua.

Questioned on Selangor DAP's position on the issue, he replied: “No position.”

"Our members are allowed to express their opinions but they would have to deal with whatever repercussions that come,” he said.

Pua added that the statement has nothing to do with DAP as it was not made by the party and Zaid does not hold any position in DAP.

DAP's top leadership has also remained silent on the issue, including on Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos torching images of Zaid, smashing a cardboard cutout of him with a sledgehammer and even threatening to hit him on the head with the hammer if the police do not act against him.

Other Pakatan Harapan leaders, including Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, have also chosen to keep mum.

Yesterday, Selangor Bersatu Youth demanded that Zaid apologise for his remarks and asked him not to make the same mistake in the future.

Selangor Umno, on the other hand, is organising a public rally on Sunday to express support for the sultan.

Zaid had courted flak with his response to the sultan's warning that Mahathir's anger could raze the nation.

"Selangor Sultan should be careful with his words. No one is immune when the country burns.

"When some rulers play politics; they must know the consequences. Don't think there's no price for partisanship," he had said.

Following this, Sultan Sharafuddin described Zaid's remarks as rude and told him to return to his home state of Kelantan if he disagreed with him.

The police are investigating the former minister under the Sedition Act.

Zaid, a former law minister, had joined DAP in February this year.
