Police have recorded a statement from Dr Mahathir Mohamad's wife Siti Hasmah Ali with regard to a protest against “toxic politics” last September in Kuala Lumpur.

Siti Hasmah, 91, arrived at the Yayasan Al-Bukhary building in Kuala Lumpur at about 9am. She was accompanied by Mahathir and the couple's daughter Marina.

Later, two police officers from Bukit Aman arrived at 11.40am and spent more than an hour questioning Siti Hasmah.

Her lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla (photo) told reporters that the case is being investigated under Section 9 of the Peaceful Assembly Act.

He said the police had 12 questions, some of which were related to her speech at the protest.

Hanif said the police could have just viewed Siti Hasmah's speech online instead of having to record a statement from her.

Furthermore, he said people can view her speech to determine for themselves if the contents were inflammatory or against the law.

“The police asked for statements from Mahathir four times. It has been two years and the police have not taken action.

“If there is evidence, bring it to court. Don't waste her time, we see her as 'ibunda rakyat Malaysia' (Mother of Malaysians). She is 91,” he added.

Responding to a question, Hanif claimed the move is definitely politically-motivated.

“The trend is clear... they are attempting to intimidate the rakyat,” he said.

In her speech at the protest, known as the “purple rally”, Siti Hasmah spoke about violence against women.

She also commented on an incident where movie producer David Teo was slapped in the presence of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

“Back in the old days, no one could be easily slapped at a public event,” she had said.

Teo was slapped by actor Sulaiman Yassin, better known as Mat Over, for allegedly behaving in a manner which was insulting to Najib during a dialogue session.

Earlier, Marina tweeted about the police questioning her mother and posted a photograph, which featured Siti Hasmah and the “Wanita Unggu” support group.
