PKR has launched a 100-day countdown to the release of jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, to galvanise the electorate ahead of the coming 14th general election.

"With Anwar in jail, he was out of sight for some time, and people have forgot (about him). Now, we are saying, 'Hey, he's coming out soon'," said PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

"That's the hope we are giving the voters, so they can see a chance, or a greater chance, for the change," she told the press conference after the launching the countdown.

Wan Azizah said that she believes the collaboration between Anwar and Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be the push the country needs to introduce reforms.

To commemorate the countdown, PKR unveiled a billboard mounted atop its Petaling Jaya headquarters, which will mark the number of days until the jailed leader’s release.

On Feb 10, 2015, Anwar was sentenced to five years' jail for his second sodomy charge, and is due to be released on June 8.

In his absence, Harapan chose Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its prime ministerial candidate, with Anwar slated to eventually succeed him. 

At today's event, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin (photo) reaffirmed that Anwar will be made the eighth prime minister after Mahathir, should Harapan capture Putrajaya in the coming election.

Wan Azizah, the coalition's candidate for deputy prime minister, also expressed her concern over Anwar's health, as he is suffering from an inflammation on his shoulder following a surgical procedure.

"He will be brought to Hospital Kuala Lumpur to get a steroid injection. While I anticipate his release, I have some apprehension (over his health) also," she said in her speech at the launch.
