DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has 'thanked' Rosmah Mansor for reminding Malaysians about the RM24 million diamond ring controversy, as he believes many would have forgotten about the issue.

However, Lim questioned why the wife of caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak did not see fit to address the issue of the pink diamond pendant and necklace, which was alleged to have been purchased for her using money from 1MDB.

"Malaysians must thank Rosmah for reminding them about the diamond ring, as I believe most Malaysians have forgotten about it.

"What they remember is the infamous US$27.3 million 22-carat rare pink diamond set in a necklace, which the US Department of Justice alleged was bought by Malaysian billionaire, Low Taek Jho or Jho Low... (with) 1MDB money for the wife of 'Malaysian Official 1'.

"Why did Rosmah Mansor talk about the USD$8 million diamond ring, and not about the USD27.3 22-carat pink diamond necklace?" he asked in a statement today.

Lim claimed that leaving out the issue of the necklace, while only addressing the issue of the diamond ring, has cast Rosmah in an unfavourable light.

He said that should Pakatan Harapan win the mandate of the people in the coming 14th general election, it will demand the return of all "ill-gotten gains from the 1MDB proceeds," and will auction off the pink diamond necklace, and even the superyacht Equanimity.

Rosmah had raised the issue of the diamond ring when speaking to women BN members in Lembah Pantai yesterday.

She had chided PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli for his "half-truths" on the matter, referring to the latter's 2014 allegation that Najib had plundered the country’s resources to fund her diamond ring purchases.

US-based jeweller Jacob & Co had in 2013 corroborated Rosmah's claim that she merely viewed the ring in question, which had been shipped to Malaysia for “inspection purposes only” before it was taken back to the US.

On the issue of the necklace, Lim had been referring to the civil forfeiture suits filed by the DOJ last year, in which it was alleged that the US$620 million returned “donation” was used by Jho Low for jewellery for the wife of Malaysian Official 1 (MO1).

MO1 was described by the DOJ as a high-ranking government official, which was later confirmed by caretaker minister in the prime minister's department Abdul Rahman Dahlan to be Najib.
