A list purportedly showing the names of all seven Umno candidates is being circulated on the social media.

The names included four candidates who have already publicly declared their intention to contest, namely acting president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah who is also known as Ku Li, Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and blogger Rahmat Azim Abdul Aziz.

However, the list also revealed the names of three other candidates, namely Rosile Saat from the Bangi Umno division, Mohamed Iqbal Maricair from the Bandar Tun Razak Umno division and Mohd Yusof Musa @Jamaluddin from the Iskandar Puteri Umno division.

Earlier today, Umno executive secretary Ab Rauf Yusoh confirmed seven candidates had submitted their nomination papers for the position of Umno president in the June 30 polls.

However, he declined to reveal their names, stating that the seven aspiring candidates had to be vetted first to determine if they qualified in accordance with the party constitution.

The Umno secretariat also refused to confirm nor deny whether the list of seven names was authentic.

However, a check on the details on the list, including the identity card numbers, corresponds with the names listed.

Bandar Tun Razak Umno deputy chief Saharudin Zainal Abidin also confirmed that Iqbal, who is from his division, was running for president, adding credence to the list.

"He's doing it on his own accord. It is not endorsed by the division," he told Malaysiakini.

Meanwhile, a source in Iskandar Puteri division said the leadership was not informed on the candidacy of Mohd Yusof.

"We have not received any information whether he would contest. We also don't know whether he will receive any support," the source told Malaysiakini.

If the list is correct, it means the race for the Umno presidency will likely be between three established candidates, namely Khairy, Zahid and Tengku Razaleigh.

The other candidates are little-known and may not qualify after the vetting process.
