The cabinet has decided to bar ministers and deputy ministers from issuing support letters for government projects and matters with financial implications, Education Minister Maszlee Malik said.

"This is for good governance. This (issuing such letters) was often practised in the past and it led to abuse of power and so on," Maszlee said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.

He said this when asked for his comments on the practice of politicians issuing support letters.

Maszlee said exceptions would be made, but not encouraged, for cases that didn't involve money such as support letters for matters concerning the health of an individual.

Pakatan Harapan had been embroiled in a scandal after a youth leader from Bersatu - Maszlee's party - used such a support letter from DAP lawmaker Fong Kui Lun to secure Ramadan bazaar lots from Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

Bukit Bintang Bersatu youth chief Mohd Noorhisyam Abd Karim is accused of selling those lots to traders and making hundreds of thousands.

Mohd Noorhisyam has denied the allegations, while Fong said that he was told that there would be financial implications in him issuing the support letter.
