Frozen Umno accounts – KJ hopes it's only for investigation

It is hoped that the freezing of central Umno's account and those of some states by the MACC is only to conduct investigations and not an attempt to ban the party, said Umno presidential candidate Khairy Jamaluddin.

Khairy said if he was elected as Umno president he would act immediately and strive to ensure that Umno’s legal accounts and property were not confiscated.

“(In the event of winning), first, we will get the advice of a lawyer, see the authorities and meet the prime minister […] if (frozen) to investigate it’s fine, but do not attempt to deregister the party.

“If there are any donations from the sources which are being investigated, to Umno, we hope they are detailed as it will affect the party as a whole. I do not want any such contributions to jeopardise Umno,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after a meet-and-greet session with party members the Bukit Merah Laketown Resort in Bagan Serai today.

The former Umno Youth chief said the freeze on Umno9 accounts also made it difficult to carry out administrative work at various levels.

“I only received news that the accounts of Umno Malaysia, Selangor, Penang and Johor were frozen. With the freezing of the accounts, it will make it difficult for Umno to carry out administrative work,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khairy who is Rembau MP, also announced an addition to his manifesto namely giving a 30 percent provision for Wanita on the Umno Supreme Council if elected as president.

He said the move was important to show Umno as a progressive party and a party of the future that gives women a more open space. - Bernama
