BALAKONG POLLS | PAS will not waste time contesting in the Balakong by-election considering past factors and current situation, including Pakatan Harapan's landslide victory in the state constituency in the last 14th general election.

Party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the huge majority achieved by the late assemblyperson Eddie Ng Tien Chee was the reason the party unlikely to field a candidate there.

"The majority gained was huge. So we don't want to waste the people's time to campaign.

"But we will make a new decision if we think we have a new interest or concern," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

In the GE14, Ng won with 41,768 votes, while Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali (PAS) and Lim Chin Wah (BN) garnered 6230 and 5874 votes respectively.

Earlier, Election Commission has announced Sept 8 as a voting day for Balakong by-election. 

Nomination day will be on Aug 18 while the campaign period will last for 21 days.

Commenting on the public perception when the party does not contest in both by-elections (Balakong and Sg Kandis), Tuan Ibrahim said it was PAS' right to not contest in any by-election.

"We don't want to just simply contest... and we are not tied to anything. It's just that we weigh in the past factors and current situation," he said.

The Balakong seat was vacant after Ng, 40, was killed in an accident along the Grand Saga expressway on July 20.
