Amanah is prepared to welcome former Umno minister Mustapa Mohamed or any other former Umno leaders interested in joining the party into its ranks.

Utusan Malaysia quoted party president Mohamad Sabu as saying that the former Umno veterans could share their experiences as members of the former BN administration.

“We welcome Umno veterans to join us because they could give us warnings. They know why they (Umno) lost.

“We don’t know which direction Mustapa is going, but we say welcome and ahlan wasahlan to Amanah,” the defence minister said during the party's third anniversary celebrations in Temerloh.

Mustapa announced his resignation from Umno earlier this week, claiming that the task of addressing the trust deficit in Umno is becoming increasingly difficult.

The veteran politician’s resignation came as a shock to many as he was elected to the Umno supreme council with the highest number of votes during the party election in June.

According to Amanah’s news organ Malaysia Dateline, also present at today's party celebration was former Umno minister Syed Hamid Albar and Cheras division chief Syed Ali Alhabshee.

Umno won a total of 54 parliamentary seats in the 14th general election, but five of its MPs have since quit.

Besides Mustapa, Kimanis MP Anifah Aman, Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal and Bagan Serai MP Noor Azmi Ghazali.
