MCA AGM | Finance Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng is jealous of MCA establishing its own higher learning institutions, according to Wee Ka Siong.

The new MCA president slammed Lim for exacting "revenge" on MCA by slashing allocations for its Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar).

"I would like to tell Lim, don't be jealous of the achievements of TAR UC, which was established by MCA.

"There is no need to threaten MCA. MCA will stand firm on the issue of TAR UC, and will fight right until the end.

"No one can alter its history nor deny its accomplishments. This is our territory, and no one can rob us of TAR UC," he said when delivering his policy speech at the MCA annual general assembly in Kuala Lumpur today.

'Rocket University'

Wee then challenged DAP to set up its own university.

"I suggest that he sets up a Rocket University or Harapan University, and invite TAR UC alumni association to manage the institution," he said.

Wee insisted that MCA would not stand in DAP's way should it decide to set up its own institution and impose lower tuition fees than TAR UC.

"We are not afraid of competition, as long as people from the lower income group can benefit from quality, affordable education."

Harapan had cancelled its matching grant for TAR UC in Budget 2019.

Lim was reported as saying that MCA should relinquish its ownership of TAR UC and Utar before the government provides more allocation for the two institutions.

Wee reiterated his deputy Mah Hang Soon's previous remark that the move reeked of political vengeance.

Despite noting that TAR UC may be forced to increase its tuition fees next year, he promised that the fees will remain the lowest among private institutions of a similar standard.
