Temple riot: Four claim trial, including a One City security guard

Four individuals today claimed trial to charges related to rioting at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya on Nov 28.

They are Muhammad Ridzuan Sekh Ruslan, 26, Irwan Nordin, 38, Mohd Khairi Abd Rashid, 24, and Rozaihan Jamaludin, 38.

Irwan was identified as a security guard employed by One City Development Sdn Bhd. The occupations of the other three individuals are unknown.

All four were charged according to Section 148 of the Penal Code for possessing weapons during a riot.

According to the charge sheet, the accused individuals were alleged to be in possession of a stick, a knife, an axe and a parang.

If found guilty, they can be jailed for up to five years, fined or both.

Magistrate Nor Ariffin Hisham set bail at RM10,000 and Jan 17 for case management. 

The prosecution team was led by deputy public prosecutor Salim Soib while the Irwan was represented by Rafique Rashid Ali. The other accused were unrepresented.

Another individual, Mohd Shamis Samsuri, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 151 of the Penal Code for failing to disperse from an assembly of more than five persons.

Nor Ariffin handed Mohd Shamis a two-month jail sentence.

Following this, T Thinekaran, 34, was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for assaulting an individual - a 25-year-old with a 'Datuk' title - at 4.30pm near the temple - about 12 hours after the riot had subsided. Thinekaran has claimed trial.

Another individual, R Pavethren, pleaded guilty to two charges – one for ignoring traffic directions and another for failing to produce his identity card when required by the authorities.

Nor Ariffin handed Pavethren a RM5,000 fine for each offence.
