The era of Umno sowing hatred against PAS under the leadership of Dr Mahathir Mohamad has ended, says Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The Umno Youth chief said this in response to Mahathir's sarcastic comment that PAS was working with a "kafir (infidel) party," in reference to the cooperation between both parties in the recently concluded Cameron Highlands polls.

"It appears Mahathir is desperate. I pity and sympathise with him. At least the 22-year era of Umno under Mahathir, during which he constantly sowed hatred against PAS, is over," he said in a statement today.

Mahathir headed Umno from 1981 to 2003, before forming the splinter party Bersatu in 2016 and leading Harapan to end Umno-BN's six-decade reign in last year's general election.

BN, backed by PAS, won the Cameron Highlands by-election on Jan 26 with a 3,238-vote majority, the highest since the 2004 general election.

The two coalitions are expected to clash again in the Semenyih polls on March 2.

In his statement, Asyraf Wajdi said he expects Umno and PAS to continue their cooperation.

"God willing, Umno and PAS will continue the cooperation in the name of Islam and uniting Muslims, as it is what the people want."

Umno and PAS saw a strained relationship in the 1980s and 1990s, with then-PAS Youth chief Abdul Hadi Awang declaring Umno members kafir.

The PAS president is now cooperating with Umno, after the latter was unseated from federal power.
