The government has launched the national wage index (NWI) to help the public track changes in wages.
Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran said the index would benefit both employees and employers.
For employers, he said the index would help them draw up wage scales, while employees can use the NWI to help negotiate for better salaries.
"The government as a policymaker can use the NWI to monitor salary adjustments, as input for fixing salaries, as well as to revise the minimum wage and for policy considerations," Kulasegaran said at the NWI launch in Putrajaya.
The index was developed by the Institute of Labour Market Information and Analysis (Ilmia).
It is composed of 169 types of jobs and is said to represent 80 percent of the market in the country.
