Umno laments Harapan wresting PAC position

Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin today questioned if Pakatan Harapan was abandoning its pledge to good governance.

This was after Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad refused to return the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairpersonship to the opposition.

"It would be disappointing and shameful if Harapan continues to ignore its manifesto and promises made in the 14th general election that it would even politicise practices that are intended to improve transparency.

"Was it not Harapan that promised to improve good governance and integrity in the administration of the country?

"Unfortunately, this is now being sidelined and ignored. The government must cease such an attitude," he said in a statement.

The opposition lost control of the post after Umno's Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee defected to Bersatu, which is part of the ruling coalition.

Mahathir had instructed Kiandee not to relinquish the position, stating that there was no constitutional requirement that the PAC chief position should go to the opposition.

However, allowing the opposition to lead the PAC was part of Harapan's manifesto.

BN had proposed Umno Wanita chief Noraini Ahmad to take over from Kiandee but Mahathir said if the opposition wanted the position, it should first gain a majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
