PARLIAMENT | Tan Yee Kew (Harapan-Wangsa Maju) today mooted the idea of Anwar Ibrahim (Harapan-Port Dickson) heading the National Economic Action Council (NEAC).

"I propose the Port Dickson MP who has been leading the reform movement for the past 20 years to lead the NEAC so that the elements of reform are fairly reflected in our development strategies and programmes," Tan (above) said in her debate on the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat.

This is because, she said, the council should not just confine itself to solving economic issues as they appear.

It should also work on a new economic model for the further development of the nation, she said.

"The people are hoping for change and the new government has been given the mandate to lead this nation in a different direction.

"For this nation to progress, no race should lag behind in all aspects of life. It is time we look for a new economic model for development," she said.

Creating a more equitable distribution structure will provide a foundation for the country's future economy, she added, but the Pakatan Harapan government must also decide on the core economic activities that will drive the future economy.

The advancement of technology has created more possibilities of new industries to branch into, she pointed out.

"We need to look beyond the traditional industries.

"Technology has made possible the development of entrepreneurship in many new sectors and businesses and I believe that is where the future of this nation lies," she said.
