PARLIAMENT | A Pakatan Harapan lawmaker has urged the government to reconsider its position not to provide equal allocation for all MPs regardless of their political affiliation.
"The issue of (special) allocation for the parliamentarians have been raised many times (in the Dewan Rakyat sitting) and I feel we should be serious about this," said Hassan Abdul Karim (PKR - Pasir Gudang).
"Firstly, this is not just concerning (our) manifesto, but Article 8 of the Federal Constitution which states that (the government) should act fairly.
"So, I urge the government to consider (providing) equal allocation for all MPs," he said during the committee stage debates of the Supplementary Supply (2018) Bill 2019 today.
On Monday, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister Department Md Farid Md Rafik said that the allocation for Harapan MPs has increased threefold from RM500,000 last year to RM1.5 million this year, while the allocation for opposition MPs remained at RM100,000.
On top of that, government MPs also receive a RM300,000 allocation for their service centres, double the amount received in 2018.
The opposition lawmakers had decried that they have been unfairly treated.
"For a democracy to flourish, we need an efficient and robust opposition to check the government of the day," said Santiago.
