Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) to provide evidence to support its conclusion that the police were involved in the enforced disappearances of pastor Raymond Koh and activist Amri Che Mat.

"I think they must produce some evidence, this is merely hearsay," he told a press conference after chairing the Bersatu supreme council meeting in Petaling Jaya this evening.

"I don't know whether they have evidence to prove this is what happened. If they do, of course we will take it up.

"But please remember that this did not happen during our government, it happened during the previous government, and a lot of things done under the previous government are hidden from us, hidden from the public." 

Earlier today, Suhakam announced that Koh and Amri were victims of enforced disappearance, with the likely involvement of state agents, such as Bukit Aman's Special Branch.

Amri was abducted in late 2016, and Koh the following year.

Suhakam recommended the establishment of an independent task force to reinvestigate both cases.

Calls have also been made for inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun to be investigated for his alleged complicity in covering up the cases, and either resign or be removed from his post.

Fuzi headed the Special Branch during both abductions, and is due to retire as IGP next month.

Asked about the call to probe Fuzi, Mahathir said the top cop should be allowed to retire first, and his successor made to investigate the matter.

The premier also commented on fugitive businessperson Low Taek Jho's complaint that the sale of the Equanimity to Genting Malaysia Bhd for the "bargain basement" price of US$126 million (RM514.2 million) was a politically motivated attack on his opponents.

"He can come here (to Malaysia), and I will go to the court to defend the decision," he quipped.

The whereabouts of Low, a central figure in the 1MDB scandal, remain unknown.
