Explaining economic state, Anwar gives analogy of splurging family

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim today acknowledged that there were complaints that some people were not enjoying benefits as they did before, attributing it to the challenging economic situation in the country.

He gave an analogy of a household head, who appeared generous and splurged on the family only to leave them with a heavy debt after he dies.

"If in the past, the family head spend as much as he could and gave tens of thousands of ringgit to his children.

"When he passes away, it is found out that he actually owed millions and his children who takeover cannot expect to provide the same benefit.

"We need to explain this and it will take time for people to understand why they get some things in the past but not now," told a press conference after meeting Kelantan Pakatan Harapan leaders in Kota Bharu.

Anwar also quoted famed economist Adam Smith who likened a country's economy to the finances of a household.

"It is like a household, if we splurge during our time, we will enjoy it. But they forget those who come after will have to bear a heavy burden," he said.

However, Anwar said this did not mean Harapan can give excuses not to perform better.

"This does not mean we cannot improve our performance. Harapan is a coalition of reform," he said.

Anwar said Harapan must take heed of criticism.

"We cannot be arrogant in thinking that everything we do is perfect. Instead, we must try to improve," said the Port Dickson MP.
