DAP urges cops to act on 'replace Maszlee' fake news

DAP has lodged a police report on an allegation that it wants Education Minister Maszlee Malik replaced by his deputy Teo Nie Ching.
Seri Delima assemblyperson Syerleena Abdul Rashid, who lodged the report at the Northeast police headquarters in Penang today, claimed that the "fake news" is being spread by the Umno Online Facebook page.
Syerleena said this is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities, as well as Sections 499 and 500 of Penal Code for defamation.
"DAP made no such demand. Umno is using hatred and stirring racial sentiments to propagate fear," she said after lodging the report.
"It is clear that they are threatened by Pakatan Harapan’s strength and support."
Syerleena said creating enmity between Harapan component parties is just another Umno tactic to "divide and conquer."
She added that it was obvious that the opposition party cannot even begin to discuss pressing issues in a mature manner.
Yesterday, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said that there is an orchestrated campaign to portray his party as out to get Maszlee (photo).
Lim cited several news reports claiming that his party was purportedly pressuring Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to replace Maszlee with his Teo, who is from DAP.
He described the allegations as "lies and falsehoods."
The DAP leader also denied that his party has anything to do with a petition asking Maszlee to step down from his post.
Meanwhile, Syerleena described the fake news as a serious issue. and urged the police and the Communications and Multimedia Commission to take immediate action.
Also present when the report was lodged were Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, Pengkalan Kota assemblyperson Daniel Gooi, Penang Wanita DAP organising secretary Koay Gaik Kee, Penang Island City councillor Gerald Mak, Jelutong Bersatu chief Omar Abdullah, Bukit Gelugor PKR deputy chief Amir Rudin Abdul Rahman and Penang Amanah Youth membership bureau director Ghazali Mohamed Ismail.
Assemblypersons Jason H'ng Mooi Lye (Jawi) and Satees Muniandy (Bagan Dalam) also lodged separate police reports in Seberang Perai.
