“This is to preserve the good name of the Pakatan Harapan government,” Otai Reformis chairperson Dr Idris Ahmad said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
The group also criticised Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad after the latter was quick to dismiss the leaked clips as likely fake even before their authenticity has been established.
They said this rection was much different from how Mahathir treated his then deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim when the latter was accused of sodomy in 1998.
"Mahathir's actions are very different than in 1998, when Anwar was sacked (as deputy prime minister) and punished, before police completed investigations and the courts passed judgment.
"In 2019, Mahathir's statement (on Azmin) is very different.
"We hope Mahathir does not have 'double standards' and take a one-sided approach to the matter," he said.
Meanwhile, Idris also rapped Deputy Prime Industries Minister Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin for suspending Haziq as his senior private secretary with immediate effect.
He said it was unreasonable for action to be taken against Haziq, who was also called to submit an explanation letter, when no action was taken against Azmin.
"We have to be fair to all employees. If we get information on our employee's mistake, we launch an investigation first. We give the accused the chance to defend himself.
"We will ask for him to go on leave. But if you take action against an employee just because you feel that he had committed something wrong, then the employee can initiate action at the Industrial Court," he said.
Shamsul had on Thursday announced that Haziq was given three days to answer to the show- cause letter.
Failure to do so, the ministry would terminate Haziq's employment contract.
