Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali said Santubong PKR Youth chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz, who accused the PKR deputy president of having sex with him in a video, exhibited the character of someone who had been manipulated.
Azmin said this when asked if he knew who Haziq was.
"I know him from afar as he is a party member. He was a party member who joined the opposition and after we won, decided to jump back into PKR.
"This is the character of an individual who is manipulated for this slander," Azmin told journalists, after attending a Hari Raya open house organised by the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) in Shah Alam today.
Following the release of a series of sex videos sent specifically to journalists and PKR members over social media, Haziq claimed he was one of two men in the video.
He also implicated Azmin as being his partner in the video.
Azmin has denied Haziq's allegation, calling it a character assassination intended to kill his political career.
The minister echoed Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's view backing him.
"I would like to stress, as stated by the prime minister, that if there are any differences in opinions or if someone fails to serve the people in an acceptable manner, do not resort to dirty and disgusting tactics.
"As a new government, we must hold on to political values and principles and not fall into cruel and disgusting politics.
"The prime minister's serious advice should be heeded by all quarters, particularly the leadership," he said.
Asked if he suspected anyone in the smear campaign against him, the minister said he did not want to weigh in on that matter.
"I don't want to make any accusations," he said.
