Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali says he will continue to serve the people amidst calls for him to be placed on leave as authorities probe a sex video scandal implicating him.
Asked today if he would in fact take leave, the PKR politician sidestepped the question.
“As mentioned by the prime minister (Dr Mahathir Mohamad), the message was very loud and clear - stop this gutter politics.
“The authorities will continue to investigate and I have given my commitment that we want the investigation to proceed. I will give my full support and cooperation,” he said when approached by the media after a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration held in his constituency Bukit Antarabangsa this morning.
Yesterday, PKR-linked NGO Otai Reformis called for the minister to be placed on leave pending ongoing police and MACC probes, in order to “preserve the good name of Pakatan Harapan”.
Today, Azmin brushed off the idea and stressed his intention to rise above the scandal.
“It is our duty as leaders of Harapan (and) as the new government to stick to the new policies, new approaches and new politics.
“We have to defend politik nilai (value-based politics).
“I remain focused on delivering as the minister of economic affairs and I am here to support the policy of the prime minister. We will continue to move forward to deliver for the people,” he said.
Earlier this week, video clips depicting two men engaged in sexual acts were systematically distributed through WhatsApp to PKR members as well as the media.
Haziq later confessed to being the person in the clips and claimed that Azmin had been his partner.
Azmin has denied the allegations and described the scandal as a plot to ruin his political career.
Following several reports by Haziq, as well Azmin’s aide Hilman Idham, the police have begun investigating the matter.
Yesterday, Haziq was arrested at KLIA before boarding a flight Manila, the Philippines. He is being probed for four charges, including carnal intercourse.
