DAP's Lanang MP Alice Lau has been confirmed as the new chairperson for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh).
A statement by the Niosh said Lau had been appointed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to chair the institute effective from Oct 1 this year until Sept 20, 2022.
"Niosh is confident that Lau, with her experience and qualifications, will be able to contribute further to Niosh, and will lead Niosh to greater heights in excellence," the institute said.
Lau is a pharmacist by profession and has a Masters in Pharmacy from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
She replaces Lee Lam Thye, whose contract with the organisation expired recently.
When contacted, the two-term MP said she will issue a statement on her appointment tomorrow.
Malaysiakini had learned about Lau's appointment on Thursday.
When contacted then, she declined to comment further on the matter, including whether it is appropriate for a Pakatan Harapan MP to fill the role - as the ruling coalition had promised no political appointees in government-linked agencies - and whether she would accept the role when she gets an offer letter.
Malaysiakini has also been contacting Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran's office since Thursday for his comments regarding the offer to Lau, and several other issues related to other appointments in Niosh, including another key position in its board of directors.
There has yet to be an official response from Kulasegaran or his office.
