Politics will often witness “court intrigue” resulting in the conception of schemes and plots, according to Anwar Ibrahim.
“We cannot prevent this,” he said when quizzed on the alleged conspiracy to prevent him from succeeding Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
However, the PKR president said he is not perturbed by such attempts.
“I have no problem. We just focus on work,” he added.
He also pointed out that the decision regarding who would succeed Mahathir was made before the last general election, and Pakatan Harapan leaders have not nominated other candidates for the post.
Last month, the Harapan secretariat had accused former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein of attempting to form a new government without DAP and Amanah.
The accusation came hours after Anwar hinted that Hishammuddin was canvassing support among the lawmakers and urged BN MPs not to cave in to threats of prosecution.
Malaysiakini subsequently quoted sources claiming that Hishammuddin was working with those from within Harapan as well.
However, the Umno MP has denied the accusation, claiming that he lacked the political clout to undermine the current Harapan government or Anwar.
Meanwhile, the PKR president also commented on Mahathir's latest remarks regarding the succession plan during an exclusive interview with the Sydney Morning Herald.
Asked if he would pass the baton to Anwar and not PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, who is speculated to be his preferred successor, Mahathir replied in the affirmative.
“Thank you to the people, Harapan and Tun (Mahathir),” replied Anwar, when asked about Mahathir's statement.
The PKR leader also noted that as mentioned before, he is tired of answering questions regarding the succession plan.
In the interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Mahathir also said that numerous people have asked him to remain in office, but he has decided that Anwar should succeed him before the next national polls.
“Yes, I will (pass the reins to Anwar). Although there are lots of other people who have been asking me to carry on until the next election, but that is their view.
“My commitment is to step down before the next election, certainly,” added the 94-year-old premier.
