• UPDATED 9.12PM | Added background and Guan Eng's event at IOI Mall.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has set a timeline to hand over the prime ministership to Anwar Ibrahim, reveals DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Asked about the transition during a press conference in Putrajaya this evening, he said the Pakatan Harapan presidential council will decide on and announce the handover date when “appropriate”.

“The prime minister has set the timeline.

“And definitely, the Pakatan Harapan presidential council will then meet.

“I’m sure a date will be set and that it will be announced at the appropriate time,” he said.

The Harapan presidential council is made up of top leaders from Bersatu, PKR, DAP and Amanah.

Despite repeated promises from Mahathir that he will hand over the reins to Anwar, the transition has been a constant source of speculation throughout the Harapan administration.

This had been partly fueled by the lack of a publicly announced transition date or timeline.

Mahathir previously said he was prepared to relinquish his post immediately whenever the Harapan presidential council demanded it.

The latest indication on a time frame appears to be after Malaysia hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit, scheduled to take place in November.

PKR leaders, however, have pressured for the transition to take place in May this year to allow Anwar more time to implement reforms ahead of the next general election.

Lim, who is also the finance minister, had addressed the media today after visiting the booths of the three e-Tunai vendors - Touch ‘n Go, GrabPay and Boost - at the Tesco supermarket at IOI City Mall.

The government's e-Tunai campaign allows qualified Malaysians to claim RM30 through these e-wallet vendors from Jan 15 to Mac 10.

He was accompanied by Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin and her spouse Lee Yeow Seng.

Lee is also the chief executive officer of IOI Properties Group Bhd.
