Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the Perikatan Nasional government has a slim majority in the Parliament and some of the MPs may switch if the opposition can expose the ruling coalition's wrongdoings.

Speaking at a special press conference today, the Bersatu chairperson said this was the reason why they (opposition) wanted to move the vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

"The matter of the majority is not something that is unchangeable. This is the first time that we have a government that only has a very slim majority.

"If two or three of them switch from a party to another, from the government to the opposition, then this government would fall. It's not like before, where the government had a two-thirds majority. Now only a few.

"So, we believe that if we can expose the wrongdoings of the government, good sense will prevail and there would be some from the government side who will support the motion," he said.

Mahathir was answering a question from the floor on whether Bersatu and its opposition partners have the numbers to make the motion of no confidence work.

He told reporters that it is the right of every MP to move a motion of no confidence in the August House.

This is regardless whether the motion can be won or not, Mahathir added.

"I tried to include this motion for a no-confidence vote in today's sitting, but clearly the government does not allow me to speak on this matter.

"This purportedly because of the Covid-19 pandemic. But from what I saw today, the situation was very good. We could even go on to have a sitting the whole day long," he said, referring to the government's decision to shorten Dewan Rakyat sitting this morning to only have one agenda.

According to the Dewan Rakyat, Putrajaya had given the order to shorten the sitting to only have the opening speech by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as prevention of Covid-19 spread.

Motion aims at bringing down 'rogue' PM

Mahathir said he wanted to initiate the motion against Muhyiddin as the latter had allegedly been "doing things as he pleases".

He claimed that Muhyiddin had turned around from someone who pledged to bring down the Najib Abdul Razak administration to working with them.

"Because we see that the performance of this PM is not good for the country, then we as the opposition party has the right to move a motion of no confidence, as the PM so far has not been holding to his words.

"If before this he did not want to work together with thieves and robbers, but now he does not only have such people in his administration, but it seems that those who had been doing crimes before are treated nicely," said Mahathir.

He also claimed that Muhyiddin has not been holding to his promise to aide businesses that are suffering from the Covid-19 pandemic.
