In the video, Mahathir had told Bersatu grassroots members at the Perdana Putra Leadership Foundation headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday that he will campaign for Shafie as the prime minister candidate.
"I will campaign for Shafie and I will explain why we chose Shafie.
"I hope everyone can understand, even though I am not the (prime ministerial) candidate but this is someone who is aligned to me, aligned to all of us, in that he fights kleptocracy," Mahathir had said in the video.
This is amid a stalemate between Mahathir and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim over who will become prime minister if Pakatan Harapan and its allies are successful in regaining federal power.
In the video, Mahathir urged the Bersatu members to support Shafie.
"We need to support Shafie. To me, that's the same as supporting me. I will support Shafie.
"Even though there is a slight change, I hope the grassroots will continue to support our candidate Shafie Apdal," he said.
Shafie, who is from Sabah, would become the first East Malaysian prime minister if he succeeds in winning majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.
Malaysiakini earlier today reported that the proposal to make Shafie the prime ministerial candidate for Harapan and its allies have gained traction in a bid to break the deadlock.
