56 politicians arrested over alleged SOP violations during MCO - Hamzah

Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin said 56 politicians were arrested for alleged violation of the standard operating procedures (SOP) when the country was placed under the movement control order (MCO).
"Throughout the MCO between May 18, 2020, and Aug 25, 2021, 56 politicians were arrested in relation to SOP violation offences.
"Of that figure, 22 compounds were issued while 25 cases are still under investigation, eight cases classified as 'no further action' and one case charged in court," he told MPs in a parliamentary reply yesterday.
Hamzah (above), however, did not disclose further details or names of the politicians.
Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Ind-Muar) asked the minister to provide the latest number and status of investigation against politicians over alleged SOP violations during MCO.
He said this includes cases where politicians were found dining at restaurants, not wearing masks in public areas and attending mass gatherings when they were prohibited from doing so.
Ministers, deputy ministers and MPs were reportedly slapped with compounds over SOP violations during the MCO.
In April 2020, Deputy Health Minister Noor Azmi Ghazali and Perak state executive council member Razman Zakaria were fined RM1,000 each after they were found having a meal with their entourage at a religious school in Lenggong.
On June 27, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mustapa Mohamed apologised for breaching Covid-19 SOPs after he was caught dining in a cafe in his constituency of Jeli in Kelantan.
In July, then federal territories minister Annuar Musa was fined RM2,000 after he visited the residence of former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor was also fined for flouting the SOP by going on a test drive in Penang.
