Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin has queried Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob over the latter's statements in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Thursday.
In a Facebook post, the PKR MP said Ismail Sabri's statement was weak and lacking in conviction.
"I am disappointed to read the statement issued by the prime minister yesterday.
"The statement is weak, lacks conviction and failed to represent what Malaysia stands for; a peaceful, rule-based international order and conflict resolution by peaceful means.
"The ‘Situation in Ukraine’" statement didn't even call out Russia for invading Ukraine. Why is the prime minister so afraid to call out the aggressor?" asked Sim (above).
Weak statement
He said the Russian invasion into Ukraine has violated all international rule and that it was shocking to see a military superpower invades a neighbouring country by brute force.
"The lives of innocent civilians, women and children were lost in this war. And this is just the beginning.
"Malaysia is a victim of the long conflict between Russia and Ukraine as Malaysian Airlines MH17 was purportedly shot down by pro-Russian separatists.
"A weak statement like this is a disappointment for many victims whose families are still seeking truths and justice through various international courts," added Sim.
He said Malaysia must make a strong stand and join the world community in condemning Russian aggression.
"This week, the Parliament Special Select Committee will invite Wisma Putra to brief on Malaysia's stand in Ukraine. As a member of the committee, I will ask tough questions so that Malaysia will do the right thing in this crisis," he said.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister's Office expressed disappointment with Malaysiakini over its article on his statement regarding Ukraine.
Malaysiakini had, in the article, highlighted that Ismail Sabri chose not to describe Russia's attack on Ukraine as an invasion, but instead an "escalation of conflict".
It should be noted that Ismail Sabri did not mention Russia in the statement either or who Ukraine was in conflict with.
The PMO in its email claimed that the article "clearly diverted from the content of the original press release that was issued to you on the matter".
"Instead of highlighting the prime minister’s concern on the conflict in Ukraine and its people, and his urgent call for all parties to amicably resolve the crisis through negotiations based on international law, you have deliberately misquoted a word used in the press release and diverted the gist of the press release entirely."
