Recent statements by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz have raised alarm bells over at Bersatu.

During the Selangor BN convention over the past weekend, Zahid told the convention that the Selangor Umno chief had arranged for "gula" (sweets).

"The person bearing the sweets was Zafrul... I want to warn Zafrul. Don't take advantage. Take what you can," said Zahid, cryptically.

Zafrul is currently the finance minister. He was recently appointed Selangor BN treasurer.

For Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan, this statement, along with similar remarks made by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob at the event, indicated that Umno's "corrupt culture" was making a return.

"This is Umno's culture, and they are led by a president who is facing multiple criminal trials," he said.

During Ismail Sabri's speech at the Selangor BN convention, he revealed that he appointed Noh Omar as entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister in order to help Umno win back Selangor.

"He can hand out some 'minyak' (fuel). That ministry doesn't own big business, but I believe you can ask for a bit of 'minyak' from Noh.

"When we are in government, we can do a lot for our friends. Umno knows what I did. I don't have to say it in detail because the press is at the back," he said.

Wan Saiful said it was a surprise that Zafrul was now aligned with "kleptocrats" after two years after being given a political platform by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said Bersatu had defended Zafrul when the latter's policies as finance minister came under attack from Umno.

"Is Zafrul proud that he was being used to bring 'minyak' and 'gula' for Umno?" asked Wan Saiful.
