Umno leaders saddened by Najib's incarceration

Umno leaders today expressed sadness over the Federal Court's decision in upholding the 12-year jail sentence for former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.

They also recalled the contributions the Pekan MP made.

Party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said on Twitter that he hoped Najib and his family remain strong, adding that today’s ruling by the apex court will be judged by the people.

Ahmad, who is the Pontian MP, said he will not forget what Najib did for him.

“He is the son of the former prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein. But he appointed me, the son of a rubber tapper, as his deputy minister and I will never forget,” he said.

Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid took to social media saying said Najib's contributions cannot be denied regardless of the court verdict.

“I personally feel very sympathetic to Najib and his family.

“As a comrade, no matter what has happened, his service and devotion to Umno and the country cannot be denied at all.

“Justice hurried is justice buried is something we experienced in this situation,” Mahdzir said.

‘Done a lot of good deeds’

Umno supreme council member Shamsul Anuar Nasarah prayed for Najib on Facebook.

“I am saddened by this situation. May Allah grant strength to Najib and his family members.

“No matter what has been said, he (Najib) had his contributions,” Shamsul said.

Commenting on Shamsul's post, another Umno supreme council member, Md Alwi Che Ahmad, similarly said it is undeniable that Najib made many contributions to the country.

“He has done a lot of good deeds. We highly appreciate that. May Allah give him strength,” said Alwi.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who served as deputy prime minister from 2015 to 2018 under Najib, was earlier seen at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya where a five-member bench led by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat upheld Najib's conviction and sentence in his RM42 million SRC International corruption case.
