PKR veep lodges report against MIC chief, deputy for alleged defamation

PKR vice-president K Saraswathy has lodged a police report against MIC president SA Vigneswaran and his deputy M Saravanan, for allegedly defaming her.

"I am lodging the report today as Vigneswaran and Saravanan have coaxed MIC members to launch personal attacks against me.

"The attacks were mounted via an audio recording, which was circulated among MIC members around the country," Sarawasthy claimed while talking to reporters after lodging the report at the Sentul police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Also present was Sabai assemblyperson D Kamache.

According to Saraswathy, the attacks were "systematically" launched against her to prevent her from questioning MIC leaders over the alleged abuse of public funds through entities linked to the party, such as Maika Holdings, Maju Institute of Educational Development, and Yayasan Strategik Sosial, as well as another Indian-linked establishment, the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra).

"Their motive is to hurt my reputation as a female Indian leader in the opposition. I urge the authorities to investigate this matter without fear or favour," she said.

Meanwhile, Vigneswaran, when contacted, described the police report as "cheap publicity".

"She (Saraswathy) is losing momentum in her own party. The grassroots rejected her and even protested when she was appointed as vice-president.

"Now, she is having this drama to divert attention. We are not concerned. She is not a threat to the party.

“As a lawyer, if she thinks that she has been defamed, and she has the proof to back her claim, she should initiate a defamation suit," he told Malaysiakini.
