Maszlee turns multilingual to canvass for votes, channels Rajinikanth

GE15 | Former education minister Maszlee Malik has turned multilingual to canvass for votes for the 15th general election.

In a 30-second TikTok video posted last night, the incumbent Simpang Renggam MP channelled Tamil superstar Rajinikanth to urge voters to pick Pakatan Harapan for the sake of their children's education.

"Education is the 'weapon' that can change the fate of our country. Vote for Harapan," he said in Tamil.

His wife Hamidah Mat then chips in, also in Tamil: "Style is (equals to) Rajini, education is Maszlee," followed by clips of Rajinikanth in action in several movies.

In the caption accompanying the video, Maszlee said that while he is "not a boss" like Sivaji (a character in a Rajinikanth movie), he wants voters to go out to vote, come Nov 19.

"You all have the chance to become the most powerful person this Nov 19; more powerful than Sivaji the boss. Vote for Harapan. The future of the country's education is in your hands," he wrote.

Roping in mum for Hakka message

Just two days ago, Maszlee posted another TikTok video of him with his mother, speaking in the Hakka dialect, urging people to return to vote.

"Your vote is very important for the country, even one vote matters," he said.

Maszlee's mother, who is of Chinese descent, echoed the same request to voters.

Maszlee won the Simpang Renggam seat in the 2018 general election, in a three-way contest against BN and PAS candidates, with a 3,475 majority.

The Election Commission has set Nov 19 for polling, while early voting is on Nov 15.
