Outgoing environment and water minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has filed a defamation suit against PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli over the latter’s claim that he had approved an RM2 billion project after Parliament was dissolved.

According to the PAS deputy president, his lawyers from Yusfarizal Aziz & Zaid filed a writ of summons and a statement of claim against Rafizi yesterday.

The suit comes following Rafizi’s non-response to a letter of demand, dated Nov 10, sent by Tuan Ibrahim (above, left) to the PKR candidate for the Pandan parliamentary seat.

“Rafizi (above, right) did not give any written response to my lawyers but continued to slander me with statements that were not based on truth.

“To stop Rafizi from continuously slandering me and destroying my reputation on the eve of the 15th general election, I have to take legal action to seek justice and truth,” Tuan Ibrahim said in a statement today.

Rafizi had earlier last week accused the caretaker government, through the environment and water ministry, of trying to bulldoze the awarding of contracts worth billions of ringgit for cronies.

Following the accusation, Tuan Ibrahim sent a letter of demand asking Rafizi to issue a letter of undertaking within seven days promising to cease making similar allegations.

The letter also demanded Rafizi provide a draft statement apologising for the allegations. If it is to Tuan Ibrahim’s satisfaction, it will be publicized in any media of his choosing at Rafizi’s expense.

In addition, the letter also asked Rafizi to propose a suitable amount within seven days as compensation for allegedly defaming Tuan Ibrahim, which must be settled immediately once an agreement is reached.
