I objected to 'flawed' Umno sackings, suspensions - Ismail Sabri

Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob claimed there were flaws in the party’s process to suspend and sack several of its leaders on Friday.

According to Ismail Sabri (above), he objected to the decision as the party’s disciplinary committee did not advise Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to take such actions.

“I stated my objection to the decision on grounds that the sacking and suspension were done not according to the legal process and goes against principles of natural justice, including the right to defend themselves. 

“There were no show-cause letters issued to the accused for them to know the claims against them, and there was no room given for them to respond,” said Ismail Sabri in an Instagram post.

He said the accuser must refer those accused to a disciplinary committee hearing, where they will be given the right to respond.

He said any allegation brought to the committee must also be proven with evidence or by any relevant witnesses.

“If the disciplinary committee finds the accused guilty or otherwise, they must make their recommendation to the Umno management committee.

“This committee will then make their recommendation to the Umno supreme council for a final decision,” said the former prime minister.

In this case, Ismail Sabri said Umno did not go through the due process.

“I was informed that the disciplinary committee did not advise the president to take any action, but instead only informed that there were reports made against those accused.

“So, I stated my objection to the decision because there is a clear flaw in the decision-making process that led to the suspension and sacking,” he said.

“As a civilised party, Umno must be seen to be transparent in taking any actions,” he said.

In Friday’s purge, former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin was among those who said he was sacked without due process.

Former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan and former Tebrau Umno chief Maulizan Bujang, who were among those slapped with a six-year suspension, also said they were not given any room to respond through the disciplinary committee.
