Sack me if I had breached coalition govt rules, Hassan tells Fahmi

Unfazed by Communication Minister Fahmi Fadzil’s rebuke, PKR MP Hassan Abdul Karim said the party could sack him if they wished to do so.

“With all humility, if PKR leadership wants to institute a disciplinary proceeding against me for being vocal, I’m open to it.

“If my actions of airing views openly are considered a transgression by the unity government, then I’m prepared to even face sacking,” he said in a statement.

Earlier today, Fahmi, who is also the PKR information chief, told Hassan to stop meddling in ally parties’ internal affairs.

This came about after Hassan called for Umno to replace its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to regain Malay voters’ confidence in the party.

“Please respect our partners in the unity government. This is very regrettable,” Fahmi was reported as saying.

On Jan 31, Hassan was reported as saying that Umno needed to be led by a fresh face and should not only ride on the “fragile" coat-tails of Pakatan Harapan.

The issue affecting Harapan and BN, he added, was the decrease in Malay support - which Hassan said could change if Umno is led by a new president who has integrity and charisma.

On Feb 1, Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi criticised the Pasir Gudang MP and urged the latter to self-reflect before asking the party to replace its president.

On that note, Hassan said he was not offended by Fahmi’s rebuke given the latter’s position as the party’s information chief and the coalition government’s spokesperson.

“However, in my 46 years of public service since 1978, beginning with Parti Rakyat Malaysia, this is the first time I’ve been rebuked harshly through the media.

“And this is because I openly voiced my views and gave political insights.

“Since I was admonished publicly, let me also say publicly that I’m not rattled by it,” he added.
