Govt to hold Palestine solidarity rally on Sunday, says Fahmi

The government will be organising a Palestine solidarity rally on Sunday (Aug 4) in Kuala Lumpur.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this is to show the global community that Malaysians support the cause.

“God willing, we will invite all senators and Dewan Rakyat members regardless of party to be present at this rally,” he told a press conference at his ministry this afternoon.

The rally will be held at 8pm at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

Fahmi also commented on the removal of social media posts related to Hamas on Instagram and Facebook, saying that he is awaiting clarification from Meta.

“I have requested for an explanation to be procured from Meta as to why the postings uploaded by the prime minister’s official account were targeted,” he said.

Posts taken down

Earlier today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim condemned Meta for removing three posts on both social media platforms in which he had condemned the murder of late Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

He shared a screenshot from Instagram showing the removal notification, which stated that the post is likely to have “symbols, praise, or support of people and organisations that we define as dangerous.”

Fahmi said the posts may have been removed either automatically or following complaints from other accounts.

He said a similar post made by Bernama Radio had also been removed.

In connection with Ismail’s funeral, Fahmi said the government will send a representative to the burial in Qatar.

“The cabinet is unable to send a representative to Ismail’s burial as it will be held today, so there isn’t enough time, but there will be a representative,” he said.

Yesterday, Ismail was killed in his residence in Tehran, Iran.

Al Jazeera reported Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as saying that Ismail was assassinated alongside one of his bodyguards and has launched an investigation into the matter.
