Bersatu put forth great team to lead party, nation - Muhyiddin

INTERVIEW | The recently concluded Bersatu election has put forth a great team to lead the party and country forward, said party president Muhyiddin Yassin.

In an interview with Malaysiakini, Muhyiddin cited his success in arranging for the election of a “compromise team” to alleviate friction in the party.

“I had made some arrangements, and what I planned worked out,” he said, stressing everything adhered to democratic norms.

On Nov 4, Muhyiddin’s “compromise team” won the party polls, with him retaining the presidency unopposed.

Former home minister Hamzah Zainudin also won the deputy presidency unopposed after its incumbent Ahmad Faizal Azumu stepped aside to contest for the vice-presidency.

As for the vice-presidency race, Faizal, Ronald Kiandee, and Mohd Radzi Md Jidin won the three available spots.

It was speculated that the compromise was made to prevent a battle between teams aligned with Hamzah and Azmin Ali.

Under the deal, Azmin will become Bersatu secretary-general.

Elaborating, Muhyiddin said the party’s electoral results proved its delegates’ maturity - from the grassroots to top leaders.

“It’s also heartening to see our members knowing who should be leading the party, in the best interest of the country,” the former prime minister added.

Azmin to be sec-gen

Touching on Azmin, Muhyiddin said he had long decided to have the former as party secretary-general.

“Azmin has also agreed. I will personally invite him to the stage on the day (in the upcoming party annual general assembly),” he stated.

Bersatu will be holding its AGM on Nov 30 and Dec 1.

With the new leadership team, Muhyiddin said Bersatu is now ready to give its best to the nation.

“We need to sit with all our leaders to better understand our main focus. They may require some advice,” Muhyiddin said.

Whether several defeated candidates would be co-opted into certain party posts, Muhyiddin did not rule out the possibility.

“We will consider. Just because you lose, doesn’t mean you no longer have any duties or responsibilities.

“I tell all Bersatu members, all of you are important and have a role to play.”
