Sosma detainee's wife lodges report after husband hospitalised

The wife of a detainee held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) in the Sungai Buloh Prisons Complex has lodged a police report alleging assault on her spouse.

The complainant claimed in her report lodged at the Sungai Buloh police station at 9.15pm yesterday that her husband had been taken to the Sungai Buloh Hospital Emergency Department in an incapacitated state, believed due to assault.

“When I arrived at 5.15pm, I had requested to meet my husband but was rejected.

“I fear for my husband’s safety and am lodging this report based on the advice from my husband’s counsel, who was also present at the hospital,” the report reads.

‘Client in wheelchair’

Counsel Gurmukh Singh Sandhu said he arrived at the hospital at around 7.30pm and saw his client in a wheelchair.

He also claimed the prison officers refused to share details on what transpired.

“I have no idea what happened and the (prison) officers are not cooperating enough to give information.

“It gives the impression that something is being hidden from the family and their lawyer,” he told Malaysiakini.

Gurmukh urged the authorities to share information on what happened.

“Please give lawyers access to their clients. What if something serious had happened?

“This will only leave things open to speculations,” he added.

Hunger strike

On Feb 8, the family members of 32 men held under Sosma launched a hunger strike in front of the Sungai Buloh Prisons Complex.

They are demanding the government and prison authorities to allow them to visit and check on the detainees, who were said to have also started a hunger strike inside the prison.

Yesterday, the police briefly arrested Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy for allegedly entering the Home Ministry headquarters in Putrajaya without a pass.

This was over an incident on Monday where Sevan and Suaram programme manager Azura Nasron accompanied family members of the Sosma detainees, who wanted to meet Home Ministry representatives.

However, he was later released after being questioned for about an hour.

While Putrajaya district police chief Aidi Sham Mohamed and the Home Ministry denied Sevan was arrested, the Suaram leader said the officer at the scene confirmed he was being arrested.
