PKR Youth is calling on the government to announce a timeline for when it will enact a political financing law.

This is after Bersih said Putrajaya had no excuse to delay such legislation.

In a statement yesterday, PKR Youth legal and public complaints bureau chief Khairul Naim Rafidi expressed confidence that the government was working on a comprehensive, fair, and enforceable Political Financing Act, not just a symbolic one.

“In that spirit, we respectfully propose that the government consider announcing a clear and reasonable timeline for the tabling and implementation of the Act, as a strong signal of its continuing reform commitment,” he said.

In a separate statement, Sabah PKR Youth information chief Nur Hilmie Milus said that political funding legislation should not be delayed if the government truly wanted to stamp out systemic corruption.

Yesterday, Bersih chairperson Faisal Aziz reminded the government that it has the power and the numbers to urgently enact a Political Financing Act, given its control of a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

He was responding to Malaysiakini’s latest exposé, revealing more Sabah politicians implicated in the mining licence corruption scandal, which he said only appears to shock ordinary Malaysians while political leaders carry on.

In March, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said said the government may not be able to pass a law to regulate political financing before the 16th general election due by February 2027.
