Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) announced that electricity supply in all affected areas across several states has been fully restored.
In a post on its TNB Careline Facebook page, the national utility company said supply was fully resumed at close to 6pm.
“TNB thanks all affected customers for their patience and apologises for the inconvenience caused by this supply disruption,” it said.
A massive power outage struck large parts of the Klang Valley earlier, with several areas in other states also reporting similar disruptions.
In the Klang Valley, Kepong and several parts of Petaling Jaya - including SS2, Section 51A, PJ Old Town, Section 14, and Gasing Indah - are among the areas affected by the sudden blackout.
Social media users also reported outages in parts of Johor, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, and Kedah.
The power outage affected traffic flow due to non-functioning traffic lights, and some motorists were unable to refuel at petrol stations.
TNB later confirmed that a power disruption at the Edra Malacca Independent Power Plant had caused the major blackout.
It said the supply interruption was caused by an incident at the power producer’s station, leading to outages in multiple locations.
Lightning strike
In a separate statement, the independent power plant operator said the facility experienced a power trip following a lightning strike during heavy rain and thunderstorms, which led to the widespread outage.
“Immediate recovery efforts were initiated to safely restore power generation, and the plant has since resumed operations. Preventive steps are also being reviewed to further minimise the risk of future disruptions.
“Edra assures the public that every necessary measure is being taken to rectify the situation, safeguard system stability and restore reliable power supply at the earliest opportunity,” the statement read.
