MH370 search

• The cabinet today agreed to extend the agreement between the government and Ocean Infinity to continue the underwater search for the wreckage of flight MH370 in the Southern Indian Ocean.

  In a statement, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the one-year extension runs from July 1 to June 30, 2027, and reflects the government’s commitment to providing closure for the next of kin of MH370 passengers.

  

  He said the government will pay Ocean Infinity US$70 million (RM290 million) if the wreckage is successfully located, under the continued “no find, no fee” arrangement, with all key terms unchanged.

  “This extension aims to allow the remaining search area of 7,428.54sqkm to be fully completed by the company,” he added.

Johor polls

• If Pakatan Harapan manages to form the government after the state election, any decision on appointing a menteri besar will be left to the Johor sultan’s prerogative.

  Harapan’s Puteri Wangsa candidate Maszlee Malik, who has been speculated as a possible menteri besar contender, said the coalition has not discussed the matter.

  He added that Harapan is not running its campaign around any single individual, with candidates chosen based on capability.

• A Parti Bersama Malaysia candidate said she is in the process of qualifying to practise law in Malaysia, following an online dispute over her omission from the Malaysian Bar’s legal directory.

  Tamili Gopalakrishnan called the issue a “miscommunication” and said she had no intention of misleading the public, noting that her Bersama candidate profile lists her overseas legal credentials.

  

  Speaking to Malaysiakini, the Bukit Batu candidate denied ever claiming she is a practising lawyer in Malaysia.

  The controversy arose after a short clip circulated online showing her agreeing when described as a “lawyer,” prompting social media reactions.
