School stabbing

  • The suspect in the stabbing of a Form Three student at a school in Banting, Selangor, has been remanded for four days until July 10, Bernama reported.

The remand order was issued by the Telok Datok Magistrate’s Court today, with Kuala Langat district police chief Akmalrizal Radzi reportedly confirming the matter.

National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer S Vijeswari Devi, who is representing the suspect, reportedly confirmed that her client is autistic.

Bernama also reported the Selangor State Education Department saying yesterday that the injured student was receiving treatment at Banting Hospital. The victim’s father told reporters that his daughter had suffered lung injuries and sustained 16 stab wounds.

  • The father of the stab victim has denied claims that his daughter was a bully, following the circulation of a viral letter with such allegations.

He said he would leave the matter to the police to investigate and urged the public not to jump to conclusions based on unverified information.

“I have also heard the stories and received WhatsApp messages containing the list of names (of alleged bullies) that has gone viral, but we cannot verify its authenticity,” he said, as reported by Sinar Harian.

He described his daughter as a quiet person who never went out alone with her friends.

Malaysiakini is withholding the identity of the father to protect the child, who is a minor.

  • Selangor Wanita MCA has called for a more comprehensive safety strategy following the latest school stabbing.

It recommended metal detectors at entrances, particularly in larger secondary schools, as well as schools in regional and rural areas. It suggested that the Finance Ministry consider allocating funding for the initiative in the next federal budget.

It also called for wider CCTV use, a review of school security personnel effectiveness, and more frequent spot checks on students’ bags while ensuring checks have clear guidelines that safeguard student dignity.

It encouraged students facing emotional distress, bullying, or conflicts to seek help from counsellors, teachers, or parents as well.

Cybercrime

  • The government will study strengthening protection for cybercrime victims, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said.

The Legal Affairs Division study would assess measures to help victims of online scams recover funds, while reviewing whether existing punishments for offenders should be more stringent, she explained.

“Some countries have different approaches, such as Singapore, where offenders can face caning as part of their punishment. In Malaysia, the penalties involve fines and imprisonment, so this is something we will study,” Azalina was reported as saying.

She said Malaysia’s legal framework is largely centred on taking action against perpetrators through existing laws, including the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code, while the legal framework relating to victim protection requires further examination.

Johor polls

  • PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man downplayed claims the party’s election machinery had discreetly campaigned for Bersatu candidates ahead of the July 11 Johor election, saying any such involvement would have been in a personal capacity.

“However, the party’s instructions to its machinery are clear. Each is to carry out duties in the constituencies contested by their respective parties,” Utusan Malaysia quoted him as saying.

Yesterday, it was reported that Bersatu co-founder Redzuan Yusof claimed PAS machinery was still quietly assisting Bersatu candidates in the 16 constituencies the party is contesting.

The former minister said grassroots cooperation between Bersatu and PAS remained strong, adding that he had personally witnessed PAS machinery helping to campaign for Bersatu.
