One year of PM Anwar

Today marks one year since Anwar Ibrahim was sworn in as the country’s 10th prime minister.

Court saves vernacular schools

The Court of Appeal has upheld a High Court ruling that Mandarin and Tamil language vernacular schools are constitutionally legal.

This is after a band of Malay-Muslim groups tried to mount a legal challenge to question the legality of vernacular schools.

The Court of Appeal ruled that the Federal Constitution allowed for vernacular schools.

It also ruled that even if vernacular schools were detrimental to unity, this was a matter of public policy for the government to act on, and not the courts.

PAS’ solution for single women

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man wants the government to give moral support for a solution to an allegedly major problem - women over 30 who are unmarried.

Tuan Ibrahim claimed that there were around five million bachelorettes over 30 who wanted to get married but hadn’t found the right partner can do so through polygamy.

Speaking in Parliament, he said that the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry should support men who are capable of supporting multiple wives.

When criticised over his suggestion by PKR lawmaker Sim Tze Tzin, Tuan Ibrahim played the Islam card and said that non-Muslims shouldn’t meddle in this matter.
