Don't hijack Merdeka Day, Salleh reminds Bersih
Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak has reminded Bersih that they should not "hijack" the 58th Merdeka Day celebrations this weekend with their mammoth rally.
"We should not hijack Hari Merdeka that we celebrate every year. I think it would be better for them (Bersih) to choose another date," he told reporters after officiating the KL Converge 2015 convention in Kuala Lumpur today.
Regardless of differences in opinion, he said everyone should celebrate Merdeka together.
The Bersih 4 rally which is set to happen over this weekend around Dataran Merdeka is supposed to end on Sunday midnight, after the Merdeka countdown.
The purpose of the rally, which will last 34 hours, is five-folds: to demand for free and fair elections, a transparent government, the right to protest, the strengthening of the parliamentary democracy system and to save the national economy.
Aside from changing the date of the rally, Salleh also suggested that they change the venue as to not disturb the Merdeka celebrations.
The full rehearsal for the celebrations will take place at Dataran Merdeka on Saturday, he said, and the rally should not interfere with that.
Currently, there are no plans to halt the Merdeka celebrations due to the haze, he added, as the haze has not yet reached dangerous levels.
"For now, everything (the celebrations) is to go ahead as planned," he said.
