Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar appreciates the praise Bersih 4 participants have given the police but said police must still investigate the rally.

"Thank you for (the praise) but the law must be respected by all. Our job is to enforce the law," he told reporters in Port Klang today.

Among the matters that need to be investigated were the stomping of photos of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

Khalid (p hoto ) said police are also after those who brought effigies to the rally.

"This can cause provocation and stoke racial sentiments, it is very dangerous.

"They think it is just for fun, but it is not for fun [...] it is clearly inciting others," he said

Earlier at a press conference, the IGP said the negative behaviour displayed during the rally was also 'un-Malaysian'.

"This is not Malay culture nor is it Malaysian culture. [...] Is this what Bersih wants to teach the younger generations?" he asked.

He added, this was why he would have preferred that the Bersih 4 rally was held in a stadium.

"If it it was held in an enclosed area, we could have controlled the situation," Khalid said.

The police had been commended for exercising restraint during the rally, allowing it to be held for 34 hours without cracking down on the participants.

Previous Bersih rallies had ended in violence, with police firing tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters.
