Following his visit on injured national junior cyclist Nur Rozi Yanti Mat Rodzi at the Kajang Hospital today, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak wants the facility to be upgraded as soon as possible.

“I made a surprise visit (photo) to Kajang Hospital this afternoon. This hospital was built in 1889 and needs the government’s attention," he said on his blog today.

Najib said although the hospital had sufficient skills and equipment, it could still be improved in terms of security and comfort for the staff and patients as well as its capacity.

The premier said after being briefed by the hospital’s director Dr Kuldip Kaur and after having observed the conditions at the hospital himself, he wanted several things to be done immediately.

“Facilities like air conditioners must be placed at areas where there are no air conditioners and those which have malfunctioned need to be replaced, especially at treatment clinics and the hall.

“Security measures must be increased by switching the gates to walls,” he wrote.

The government last year had approved a RM10 million allocation for the hospital for 30 beds, one ward and two operation theatres.

“But for the long term, this hospital’s upgrade cannot be avoided in order to fulfil the demands of Kajang residents as the population has increased since the hospital was built,” he said, pointing out how almost all of the hospital’s buildings had only one floor.

“The government is ready to consider any suggestion to modify and upgrade Kajang Hospital,” he added.

Najib said Prime Minister’s Department’s Implementation Coordination Unit director-general Ahmad Zaki Ansore Mohd Yusof and Health Ministry’s secretary-general Dr Chen Chaw Min will follow up on this and report to him.

The premier had at noon today Tweeted that he was visiting Nur Rozi at the hospital's intensive care unit ward.

“Let’s pray that she recovers quickly,” said the prime minister.

The injured cyclist has regained consciousness and is able to communicate with the doctors, The Star reported yesterday.

The 17-year-old was training on the Kajang Silk Highway with six other cyclists, a coach and an escort van at 9am last Saturday when she fell off her bicycle and was caught under the wheels of the van.
