Pre-rally crackdown

At least 14 people including Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos were arrested ahead of the Bersih 5 and red-shirt rallies.

Bersih's office in Petaling Jaya was also raided by the police and the Companies Commission of Malaysia.

However, Bersih said its rally will proceed despite the arrest of its leaders.

The children of Maria penned an open letter following their mother's arrest, urging support for Bersih.

KL lock down

Police announced a complete lockdown of Kuala Lumpur as all vehicles will be diverted away from the protest sites.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Amar Singh said cops will do its best to ensure there are no clashes.

The red-shirts began camping at Masjid Negara, one of Bersih's gathering points, but quickly dispersed after police arrested one of their leaders.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak branded Bersih's struggle as "fake".

However his nemesis, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said the Bersih 5 rally was the last avenue to voice dissent against the government.

Maria believed more BN supporters will join Bersih 5 this time due to Mahathir and former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin's efforts.

KiniTV charged

KiniTV and its director Steven Gan, who is also Malaysiakini editor-in-chief, was charged for uploading a video of a press conference called by former Umno leader Khairuddin Abu Hassan who criticised attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali.

Gan said KiniTV will fight the case vigorously, stressing that covering press conferences was not a crime.

The charge also sparked condemnation from Human Rights Watch and the Institute of Journalists.

Bank Negara stressed that it will not impose capital controls in the wake of a weakening ringgit.

Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Azman Abdullah, who is presiding over the murder trial of deputy public prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais, visited the site of the murder.

Looking ahead

The Bersih 5 rally will take place today in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. In Kuala Lumpur, protesters are expected to gather from 10am to 6pm. The red-shirts counter-rally will also be held to oppose the yellow shirts.
